Another world entirely
The White Desert (Sahara el Beida) in south-western Egypt, 350 km from Cairo through the Western Desert, is one of the strangest natural landscapes on the planet. White chalk rocks the size of a house, sculpted by the wind over millions of years into mushrooms, towers and abstract creatures. It looks like the surface of the moon with golden sand and a blue sky.
Bahariya Oasis — the starting point
Bahariya Oasis, 350 km from Cairo (4 hours by car on a direct road), is the last stop before the White Desert. 30 000 residents, simple hotels (Camel Camp, International Health Center). All trips to the White Desert start here. Roman antiquities: the Bahariya ancient tombs (100 BCE) discovered in 1996 contain 250 mummies with gold masks.
Camping in the White Desert
The classic trip: 2 nights in a Bedouin camp in the middle of the White Desert. Day 1: drive from Cairo to Bahariya (4 hours), then 4×4 off-road to the White Desert (2 hours), camping, meat grilling on a fire, Bedouin singing. Night: full stars (no light pollution for 500 km), temperatures drop to 5 °C in January–February. Day 2: explore more rocks, return to Bahariya.
The Black Desert and crystal caves
Along the road from Bahariya to the White Desert: the Black Desert (black volcanic hills), Crystal Cave (natural quartz crystals in the walls), Bir el-Ghaba (natural hot spring). All these are stops on the classic trip.
Farafra and Dakhla Oases
Farafra Oasis, 90 km from Bahariya, smaller and less developed. Bedouin museum, traditional market, Bir Sitta hot spring. Dakhla Oasis, another 300 km further, is bigger with Islamic archaeological sites from the 8th century. Extended 5-day trip.
