Sinai — a peninsula that has everything
The Sinai Peninsula combines mountain deserts, coral reefs, the heritage of three religions (Sinai of the Bible) and luxury resorts. Sharm el-Sheikh in the south is the main region, Dahab on the east coast is more low-key, and Saint Catherine's Monastery sits at the heart.
Sharm el-Sheikh — resorts and nightlife
Sharm el-Sheikh has 40 000 residents, 6 airports and 5 million tourists a year — Europeans and Egyptians. Main areas: Naama Bay (family hotels), Umm Sid plateau (horse riding), Sheikh Nabaman (traditional Arab market). Hotels: Four Seasons, Rixos, Savoy Sharm. Prices from 100–500 USD per room.
Dahab — Bedouin relaxation
Dahab is 90 km north of Sharm el-Sheikh, 15 000 residents, an entirely different lifestyle: Bedouin tents, beach bars right on the water, 5 USD pizza, long-stay flats at 400 USD per month. No large hotels — Ganet Sinai and Le Meridien are the exceptions. Famous for diving (Blue Hole 8 km away, 130 metres deep) and windsurfing.
Blue Hole diving
The Blue Hole in Dahab is one of the world's most dangerous dive sites — 130 metres deep, with an underwater arch at 55 metres depth leading to the open sea. Hundreds of divers have died trying to cross it. For casual diving to 12 metres there is no danger — the coral reefs are beautiful. For advanced divers with a guide only.
Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery
Mount Sinai (2 285 m) in central Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments according to tradition. Climb the mountain at night (3–4 hours up) to watch sunrise from the summit — a spiritual experience for all religions. The Orthodox monastery at the foot — 6th century — is the world's oldest continually operating monastery. The library holds manuscripts from the 4th century.
Getting there and prices
Sharm Airport has direct flights from Europe (charter) and Moscow. The airport for Dahab is Sharm — taxi 90 km (50 USD) or bus (10 USD). October–April season is best: 22–28 °C, no wind. May–September: 40 °C, cheapest. Avoid September (khamsin winds).
